Bootle-based tax firm Delta Taxis is offering customers the option of cashless payment through Chip & Pin technology.

The firm, which was founded in 1968 and now operates with 2,200 drivers, said around 700 of its drivers are now offering secure Chip & Pin payment options.

A spokesman for the firm said: “There’s no delay, funds clear immediately into each driver’s PayPal account, and with less cash being carried around drivers can remain that little bit safer while out on the road.”

However, he added that customers should exercise some caution.

He said some systems still require customers to surrender card details online or through an App, leaving consumers potentially at risk from hacking.

“We would only advocate the use of secure Chip & Pin terminals like you see in shops and restaurants.”

Delta has also raised concerns over, what it says, is an apparent lack of transparency and reports of excessive fees being surcharged.

“Participating Delta drivers only surcharge the bank’s fixed 2.75% transaction fee – less than 14p for an average £5 fare.

“If you’re charged more than that you could be paying too much.

“Charges should be clearly displayed inside card-friendly vehicles and on company websites as customers have a right to know how much they’re being surcharged and why.”
