 NEW YORK

Four more New York mayors have joined the “NY Needs Uber” Coalition to support the push for the ridesharing service to be made available across the state.

The mayors who signed onto the coalition to allow the statewide use of the ridesharing app are Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, Binghamton Mayor Richard David and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan also signed onto the coalition, which was announced last week.

"We are a coalition of New Yorkers who want to see Albany leaders embrace new technology that will build on the Empire State's economic revitalization,” the mayors said collectively in a statement, Gannett's Nick Muscavage reports. “We support ridesharing services like Uber which has the potential to create 13,000 jobs in one year and make our communities safer by reducing drunk driving incidents."

Uber has also recently released a Statewide Economic Impact report that projected the creation of 13,000 jobs if the service was allowed statewide.

The company, along with its competitor, Lyft, will need a state law to operate upstate. The Legislature won't return to Albany until January.

In October, Uber hosted a jobs fair in Buffalo in which 400 locals attended to hear about the opportunities the service could create; later the same month, the company hosted a jobs fair in Rochester in which 300 locals attended.

Opponents knocked Uber's lobbying push, saying it would hurt existing jobs.

David Beier, president of the Committee for Taxi Safety, said in a statement, “Uber’s proposed Upstate expansion could eliminate thousands of good-paying, full-time jobs, including around 1,300 in the Buffalo area, 1,200 in the Albany area, 1,100 in the Rochester area, 750 in the Syracuse area and 600 in the Binghamton area.”

He continued, “If Upstate mayors consider the effect these job losses would have on their cities, they may realize that Uber is selling them a false bill of goods.”

Currently, Uber operates in New York City and is regulated by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission.

Groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving and state Restaurant Association also joined the coalition for Uber to be regulated throughout the state.
