GLOUCESTER
Glamorous revellers are making a stand against the high price of taxi fares in Gloucester – by swapping their high heels for flip flops.
Women on nights out in the city are prepared to buy cheap, 'disposable' pairs of flip flops to wear when walking from one part of the city to the other – binning them on arrival and putting heels back on at their destination.
Bar and club owners say women are prepared to do this because it is still a cheaper option than paying for a taxi to take them from the city centre to the Quays – or vice versa – which costs a minimum of between £4 and £5 and often more.
"They're protesting with flip flops, they don't want to pay those prices," said Justin Hudson, who runs Butlers bar in Eastgate Street.
Mr Hudson was speaking at a three-monthly Gloucester 'Nightsafe' meeting, an opportunity for Gloucester's night time economy champions to put forward ideas and discuss ways to improve business and safety in the city.
