 STOCKPORT

A taxi driver from Stockport was left needing hospital treatment after passengers refused to pay and then one attacked him.

The cabbie picked up two female and a male passenger at Waverley Drive, Cheadle Hulme, on Sunday at 1.30am.

He let one of the women out at Hardcastle Road, Edgeley, before carrying on to Nangreave Road in Heaviley.

Here the two remaining passengers refused to pay when they got out and when the driver confronted them he was attacked and punched in the face.

Police have appealed for witnesses but have already arrested a 17-year-old youth on suspicion of assault, who has been bailed pending further enquiries.

The driver was left with a cut head that needed stitches.

Inspector Steve Palmer, from the east area neighbourhood police, said: “The passengers got out making no attempt to pay and the taxi driver was subjected to a serious assault.

“He suffered a cut head and other injuries and is now recovering at home following hospital treatment.

“It was a nasty and cowardly assault on a man just trying to earn a living. Any attacks on taxi drivers will be met with zero tolerance.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
