WIRRAL RAPIST

An investigation was launched after a woman was raped in Wirral in the early hours of this morning.

The victim was found in a distressed state close to the New Ferry Bypass by a member of the public at around 5am.

It is believed she was picked up by a taxi in Birkenhead town centre and raped near to the shoreline before escaping through undergrowth towards the carriageway.

Police and paramedics were called and the victim was taken to Arrowe Park hospital where she was treated before being discharged.

Detective Sergeant John Harrison, from Merseyside Police's specialist Unity team, said: “The victim is being fully supported by our specially-trained officers and this investigation is in the early stages.

“Initially we are looking to speak with any witnesses who saw a woman in distress on or close to the bypass around 5.00am this morning, or saw any suspicious vehicles around this area at the same time.”
